The India squad for the Test series against South Africa will be announced after the conclusion of the third and the final Test between India and Sri Lanka that will be played at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium.
The squad was to be announced the same when selectors named the team for the third Test and ODI series against Sri Lanka. The selectors were also scheduled to conduct a press conference post the selection meeting but the unavailability of convener, Amitabh Choudhary, meant that there was no presser and only two squads were announced which were the need of the hour.
Reports have also added that Indian skipper Virat Kohli will also confirm his availability for the T20I series till December 12, which was another reason why selectors didn’t announce the squad for the T20I series.
Now, the selectors will announce the squad after the conclusion of the third Test, and a press conference is expected to be held by the concerned authorities. The selectors are expected to announce a 17-member squad, with two surprises to be named in the team.
The first could be Parthiv Patel, who might go as a reserve wicketkeeper for Wriddhiman Saha. India has had a policy of sending reserve wicketkeepers on foreign tours. Saha himself used to go along with the team as a reserve wicketkeeper for MS Dhoni on the tours to England, South Africa, Australia etc.
The second surprise could be Japrit Bumrah, who can prove to be a surprise factor on this tour. Reports had suggested he has a competition with Kuldeep Yadav for a spot in the team and Bumrah might get an edge over him.
However, the team management is keen to test out the bench strength in the Delhi Test before finalising the squad for the tour.
Selectors are expected to retain almost every member of the squad which is playing against Sri Lanka barring Vijay Shankar, who is a backup for Hardik Pandya. Since Pandya would go to South Africa, Shankar might not get the opportunity for this tour.
